Fascinating characters, involved plots and crisp dialog can be difficult to find when you are looking on television, but it's not altogether impossible, if you can take the Joss Whedon show Firefly as an example!  Though this hour long, self-described space western was canceled in 2002, ongoing fan support and a letter writing campaign brought the characters back for the movie Serenity, which turned into one of the most popular science fiction movies of the season.

The show takes its title from the model of the main ship featured, a Firefly-class spacecraft called the Serenity.  In the world of the show Firefly, Earth itself had been depleted of resources, and space travel had given mankind a new chance to colonize the stars.  While some colonies were rich and prosperous, other colonies, closer to the edge of unexplored space and less connected to the rest of the colonies, had a much more difficult time eking out a living.  This fascinating world was created by Joss Whedon, the man responsible for the smash hit series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel.  Though this show remained on the air for only a single season, DVD sales continue to be quite high, and you can still find plenty of fan gatherings both online and off.

While the show has covered a wide array of moods and storylines, it's been said that the theme of the show is simply getting by.  For the most part, the characters aren't interested in larger causes and the difference between right and wrong; their biggest concerns involve staying alive and staying independent in a world where they have to deal with men driven crazy by deep space, con artists, crime lords and ship malfunctions.

The captain of the Serenity is Malcolm Reynolds, a hard-bitten war veteran of the Unification War, a war fought between the Alliance, the planets at the civilized core of the known universe, against the planets on the rim, who were desperate for their independence.  The tide of the war turned irrevocably in the Alliance's favor at the Battle of Serenity Valley, where Mal Reynolds fought as a sergeant, and though he survived this battle, his faith and his idealism most certainly did not.  Mal is portrayed by Nathan Fillion, who had a brief role as the terrifyingly devout Father Caleb on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and was considered for the role of Angel.

Mal's second in command on the ship, Zoe Washbourne, fought by his side during the Unification War and continues to be one of the most deadly fighters on board the Serenity.  Her deadpan sense of humor combined with her no-nonsense attitude make for a vivid contrast between her and her husband, the energetic and good-natured pilot Wash.  Zoe is played by Gina Torres, who has also appeared on Xena, Warrior Princess, Alias, The Shield, and in the Matrix movies.  Alan Tudyk, who portrays Wash, is known for his movie roles, including 28 Days, Knocked Up, and A Knight's Tale.

Kaylee Frye can be considered the heart of the crew in the same way that Mal is considered the brain, and this emotionally honest and sweet-natured engineer does everything she can to keep the old ship in the air and the members of the crew from killing each other.  This can occasionally be made difficult by the presence of Jayne Cobb, a crude but highly effective mercenary who Mal won over by appealing to his greed.  Kaylee is played with grace and engaging charm by Jewell Staite, who is known for her roles in Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls, and Stargate Atlantis.  Adam Baldwin, no relation to the famous brothers, has also been seen in roles as different as The Patriot, Kubric's Full Metal Jacket, and Independence Day.

Giving the ship a thin veneer of respectability that often comes in handy is the elegant Companion Inara Serra.  In the world of Serenity, the occupation of a Companion is similar to that of a courtesan or a geisha, and as such, bears no stigma.  Inara's reasons for being on the ship, away from the civilized center of the universe are somewhat murky, as are her feelings for Mal and his for her.  Shepherd Book, another character with a mysterious past, often takes on the role of the Christian minister, offering a kind word in what can be a very harsh world.  Inara is played by Morena Baccarin, who has previously appeared in Stargate SG-1 and The O.C.  Shepherd Book is played by Ron Glass, who can be seen in Star Trek: Voyager and Jack & Jill.

Into this mix comes Simon Tam, a talented doctor from the Core who is on the run from mysterious forces who want his sister, the young genius River Tam.  Simon, played by Sean Maher of Wedding Wars and Brian's Song fame, brings tension to the ship both in terms of the people who are chasing him and from his difficulties in dealing with people who were once his social inferiors.  River Tam, played by Summer Glau, displays both childlike innocence and terrifying powers as the show goes on.  Glau has been involved in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as well as CSI, The Unit and Mammoth.

The New York Times called Whedon's Firefly a character-rich sci-fi western comedy drama with existential underpinnings, while MSN.com commended this show's witty dialog, quirky premises and dark exploration of human fallacy.  While the show has been canceled the show in its entirety is available on DVD and continues to be extremely popular!
